What information is included in the Extreme Heat pack?
Keep pets inside – Cats should not be taken outside during winter, and dogs should only be taken out for walks.
Ensure there is always access to shade – Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight is dangerous for your pets. Keep them in the shade and, if possible, indoors in a well-ventilated room.
Don’t shave your pet – Shaving your pet down can permanently damage their fur, and remove some of their natural UV protection. Instead, groom and brush pets to help them shed their winter coat, trimming long hair if necessary. If you need advice, always consult your vet.
Ensure water is always available – Pets get thirsty in the heat too. Ensure they stay hydrated: keep water nearby at all times and carry it with you when outdoors.
Don’t walk your pet in the heat – Asphalt heats up in the sun and can burn unprotected paws. If the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your pet! Your pets still need exercise, but you should avoid being outside during the hottest time of day. Walk your dog in the mornings or evenings instead.
Exercise can make your pet overheat – Ensure you reduce the amount of activity, and if needed, exercise them indoors. Keep an eye on your pet during play to ensure they aren’t overheating. Take a look at our Heatstroke pack to learn more about the signs of heatstroke in pets.
Don’t leave your pet in the car – Parked cars overheat and quickly become dangerous. Don’t leave your pet in one, not even with the AC on.
Be careful around pools – Don’t leave your pet unsupervised near water. They might not be able to get out on their own.
Add screens to windows – If you cool your house down by leaving your windows open, screens prevent pets from escaping or falling.
Visit or call your vet – The heat can exacerbate underlying health conditions in pets. Sick pets are at an increased risk of health complications during hot weather. Your vet can give you personalized advice, so it’s a good idea to book a check-up before the hot weather fully sets in.
