1. Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month: The British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA) spearheads Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month (VNAM) each May, and serves to promote the essential role that registered veterinary nurses play in the health and well-being of pets. You can celebrate your RVNs by posting photos and videos of them at work, and highlighting the value they bring to both your practice and patients. Be sure to get pet owners involved by inviting them to comment on your social media posts sharing the positive experiences they’ve had with your veterinary nurses!
2. National Walking Month: Organised by Living Streets, National Walking Month occurs in May and promotes the many benefits of walking. The campaign encourages people to walk more often, and highlights the positive effects walking has on health and the environment. You can join in on the cause by encouraging your following of pet owners to get active! Challenge them to safely bring their dogs or other pets with them on their daily 20-minute walks throughout the month, and have them reply to your social media post with a photo and #Try20! You can also use this time to offer discounts on any pet-walking products or training services you may provide at your clinic.
3. National Receptionists Day: Celebrate your veterinary receptionists on 14 May this year! Falling annually on the second Wednesday in May, this day was established to recognise and thank the hardworking, dedicated individuals who welcome others with an inviting smile every day. From providing compassionate care to ensuring every clinic experience is as smooth and stress-free as possible for pets and their owners, there’s a lot to thank your front desk team for. Show your gratitude by giving them handwritten notes or meaningful gifts, treating them to lunch, shouting them out on social media, or by simply giving them a heartfelt thank-you.

4. International Respect for Chickens Month: While International Respect for Chickens Day specifically falls on 4 May, the whole month of May is dedicated to being kind to our feathery friends! Launched by United Poultry Concerns in 2005, this awareness programme is designed to highlight the challenges chickens often face from poor farming and housing conditions. Your veterinary team can use social media to promote positive chicken lifestyles by sharing posts about proper chicken care, common facts and health issues in chickens, as well as the importance of ethical farming practices. You may even consider partnering with local farms or rescues to promote responsibly adopting or sponsoring chickens!
5. World Donkey Day: Trotting its way into 8 May, this day recognises the valuable contributions of donkeys worldwide. The purpose is to raise awareness about their welfare, as well as the need for proper care and treatment. This day is especially significant in communities where donkeys play a vital role as working animals. Your clinic can get involved by turning to social media and sharing educational content about donkeys, and emphasising their importance in diverse cultures and communities. You can also promote the need for responsible care and highlight best practices for handling donkeys. Don’t forget to ask your online followers if any of them are donkey parents, which you can do by requesting a photo in the comments section of your post!
6. National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day: The second Saturday of May (this year 10 May) is a time to recognise the need to always be prepared for emergency situations, especially for animals as they are often left vulnerable and overlooked when natural disasters strike. Let your community know the value of staying ahead of the unknown, whether it’s ensuring their pets’ vaccinations are current, having essential supplies ready, or planning for their evacuation or shelter needs. Share an emergency checklist with your social media community to let them know how important emergency preparation is to you and your team. Consider also exchanging pet rescue stories, collaborating with local animal welfare groups, or offering a discount on vaccinations to help pet parents and animal lovers stay prepared.
7. Mental Health Awareness Week: Running from 12–18 May this year with the theme of “Community,” this is a week dedicated to emphasising the importance of strong connections and supportive communities for positive mental well-being. This year’s focus aims to celebrate the communities that promote good mental health, invite open and honest dialogues, and reduce stigma surrounding mental health. You can connect with your online community of pet enthusiasts by encouraging your followers to unite, share their experiences, and champion improved mental health support together. If you can, consider throwing in a veterinary discount to not only show you value the well-being of pets, but pet parents as well.
8. National Smile Month: The Oral Health Foundation’s National Smile Month will take place 12 May–12 June this year, and serves to draw attention to important health issues while encouraging good oral hygiene practices. You can honour the occasion with free or discounted dental cleanings for pets, or by handing out pet toothpastes, toothbrushes, and low-ingredient dental chews! You could also boost your online engagement by posting on Facebook, Instagram, or any other social media platforms you use inviting pet owners to share photos of their smiley pets.
9. World Bee Day: Celebrated on 20 May, World Bee Day is a great opportunity to educate your community about the importance of bees and other pollinators in our ecosystem. Get pet owners buzzing by sharing information about how to help sustain bee populations (such as through maintaining flower and garden beds) and promote an overall positive environment for bees. Even better, consider throwing in a celebratory promotion (like giving away free wildflower seeds) for pet owners who book an appointment online on or around 20 May!
10. World Turtle Day: 23 May is an opportunity to educate your online followers about the importance of protecting our reptile friends and their natural habitats.
