What information is included in the Cyanobacteria pack?
Algal blooms, also known as cyanobacteria blooms, are caused by an explosive growth of a certain toxic type of bacteria. These bacteria are dangerous, especially when ingested.
Our pets are likely to swallow water when swimming, or to groom it off their fur. This makes them especially vulnerable to cyanobacteria toxicity. Pets should never be allowed to swim close to algal blooms, or to drink from water that houses a cyanobacteria bloom.
Algal blooms, also known as cyanobacteria blooms, are caused by an uncontrolled growth of toxic bacteria. Big groups of these bacteria might be visible to the naked eye, as they make the water look murky, like it has a layer of paint on or oil on top, or even foaming. If you see foaming at the surface of the water, if the water has a weird tint, or if the water looks dirty and oily, stay away! Keep your pet away from waters affected by algal blooms.
Symptoms of blue-green algae poisoning (also known as cyanobacteria poisoning, or algal bloom poisoning) can include diarrhea, vomiting, drooling, difficulty breathing, disorientation or confusion, and convulsions or seizures. If you notice any of these symptoms in your pet, or if your pet has swum or drank from affected water, contact your emergency vet immediately.
- Keep your pet away from contaminated bodies of water.
- Monitor your pet closely when passing by bodies of water, to stop your pet from drinking contaminated water or from swimming on it.
- Clean any water features in your house that your pet has access to, using pet-safe products.
- Ensure that there is no standing water on your yard, as it might collect in places with poor drainage.
- If you suspect your pet has bathed or drank from affected water, call your vet immediately. Clean your pet’s fur thoroughly to avoid them grooming further contaminants off their fur.
